Women Empowerment
In today’s evolving world, women are making strides across industries, stepping into leading roles and driving significant change in the business landscape. This trend is particularly noticeable in the fintech sector, where women are not only leaving their mark but also making innovation and shaping the future of the industry. Jennifer Tan, ex-Chief Executive Officer of AlipayHK and Executive Vice President of the Strategy Development and Government Affairs, GBA, Ant Group, stands as a prime example of how women can thrive in the fast-paced world of fintech.
Building a Platform for a Million Users with a Small Team
Before joining Ant Group and spearheading the launch of AlipayHK, Jennifer spent over 20 years at Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings, rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer. During her time there, she saw the rapid rise of e-payments in the Chinese Mainland and quickly realised the potential for this technology in the Hong Kong market. This insight inspired her to take the leap into fintech. However, her journey wasn’t without challenges. At a time when fintech was still in its early stage, Jennifer led a small team of just four to five members, facing obstacles such as limited technological resources. When asked why she left a c-suite level management role for this venture, she explained, "I believed Hong Kong was ready for e-payments, and I couldn’t miss that opportunity." Her determination and leadership helped her team overcome countless challenges. In 2017, AlipayHK was launched, and within just six months the platform attracted one million users, a testament to Jennifer’s market insight and exceptional leadership.
Leveraging Female’s Unique Strengths to Overcome Technical Obstacles
Jennifer’s success is not only rooted in strong decision-making but also in her unique perspective as a female leader. Despite lacking a technical background, she never sees this as a barrier to entering the fintech industry. "I always approach things from the user’s perspective, ensuring our products are simple, accessible, and free of technical obstacles," she says. This focus on the user experience allows her to lead her team in developing fintech solutions that are intuitive and easy to use.
Her story shows that, even in a tech-driven field, women can leverage their strengths to lead companies to success. Jennifer believes that building strong connections with team members is crucial, no matter what position you hold. She stresses that women’s strengths excel in communication, empathy, and keen observation that help her build close-knit teams. "Sometimes, team members don’t openly share their challenges, but as a leader, it’s my responsibility to notice and help them solve those problems," she shares. Her attentiveness and empathy not only strengthen her connection with her team but also equip her to handle complex issues with comprehensive strategies. These qualities have helped her confidently navigate through the challenges in the rapidly growing fintech sector.
Balancing Leadership and Managing Stress as a Female Executive
For Jennifer, passion is key to success. "If you don’t love what you do, negativity will creep in," she says. While developing payment tools came with its fair share of hurdles, it was her passion and strong belief in the potential of the technology that kept her moving forward. She also highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. To manage the stress of her executive role, Jennifer schedules regular "Me Time" to recharge. She enjoys quality time with her family and relaxes herself through reading or exercising to temporarily step away from work.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Leaders
As a trailblazer in the fintech industry, Jennifer is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of female leaders. She encourages women to adopt a mindset of lifelong learning and to be bold in challenging themselves. "Even though I don’t have a technical background, I’m confident in my ability to keep learning and find solutions from different perspectives," she says. Her willingness to break boundaries has kept her optimistic and resilient when facing challenges, making her a driving force for women in fintech.
In Hong Kong’s professional environment, women are given equal opportunities, with companies focusing more on talent than gender. Jennifer firmly believes that the fintech industry values skill above all else, and she is encouraged by the growing recognition of the contributions and potential of women in leadership roles.
